Finish 2011 Strong

Summer months mark the half way point of the year, a perfect opportunity for companies to reflect on New Year business resolutions and goals. For business owners, the mid-year is a perfect time to evaluate company progress so far and determine whether or not the established annual goals are still applicable to the current position of the business.

For a lot of industries in Arizona, summer months may mean sluggish business as consumers frequently spend the months traveling and catching up on other priorities. These slow months provide a great opportunity to perform a mid-year review; evaluate where your business is currently at and where you would like it to be in terms of customer relationships and profit.

When evaluating your business, there are important questions that need to be reviewed.

Take a look back at the first half of the year and plan on a big finish:

  • The Numbers. Take a look at your sales and the resulting (hopefully) profits. Of course, this means your books will have to be updated and reconciled. Print out a Profit and Loss Statement and compare it to the same time last year. What do you notice?
  • The Goals. You laid out clear goals for the year (yes, you did). Are you making good progress on these? What adjustments do you need to make?
  • Marketing. Mid-year is not the time for wholesale changes. What you will look at is one simple number: ROI. For every dollar spent on marketing, how much did you get in revenue? Look at that number and make small changes to your plan. Is your target market still profitable?
  • Sales. Review the first half of the year and measure the sales foundation that you have built. What can you forecast from that work, and what activities should you plan for to give it a boost through the finish?
  • Is your business doing unprofitable projects? Are your products and services still applicable or are they taking up shelf space?
  • The Big Picture. Time to work ON your business. Take some time to brainstorm and get feedback from others. What opportunities await your company and what successes can come with seizing those?

These are all great questions to ask in order to evaluate your company’s annual progress and determine the marketing and operational tactics that may need to be adjusted.

With the number of events taking place in the fall you still have plenty of time to get your business on track to successfully reach goals and objectives that will maximize your company’s profit. When choosing an event to attend you want to make sure that your time is well invested. To find an event that will benefit your company most, take a look at the marketing materials being used to promote the affair. What are the hosts doing to lure in customers? Do these promotions jump out at you? Can the tools and resources being offered apply to your company’s products and/or services? If so, more than likely, these events will be money and time well spent.

With slow business and declining sales marketing is usually the first expense to be cut from a budget. Effective marketing can be executed on any budget with the right knowledge, tools, and resources taught at these events. Successful businesses reflect direct relationships between marketing and sales. Managing your marketing tactics will ensure your company is maximizing its profit, which should serve as the ultimate goal of your company.

Jump into fall rejuvenated and ready to finish strong! By evaluating and modifying where necessary you will be able to ensure you accomplish established goals, and most importantly, stay Connected to your Customer.
